Illustration: Drawings or pictures created to explain or make clear.
That's what I'm trying to do when I take out my black-ink marker and begin to sketch the lines of something that has called out to me. Maybe it's the spiralling peel of a clementine, or the way the light hits the glass of my evening cocktail. I like pen and ink illustrations because they make clear what is most essential about objects. And then I add a few swooshes of colour using inks or Japanese watercolours. My drawings are joyful illustrations straight out of the garden, the kitchen or some part of my everyday life. They juxtapose geometric shapes and rustic lines and cross-hatches with a restrained palette of bright, highly-saturated colours.
